In the years that followed, Penn went on to obtain a collegiate charter (1755), graduate its first class (1757), establish the first medical school in the American colonies (1765) and become the first American institution of higher education to be named a university (1779). His many essential inventions range from bifocals and the lightning rod to the iron furnace stove and odometer.īeyond that, the civic institutions that Franklin helped launch include the country’s first subscription library (1731) and first hospital (1751), in addition to what would become America’s first university, the University of Pennsylvania, in 1749. His broad knowledge spanned multiple disciplines, and far from regarding it as an end in itself, he saw knowledge as an asset that required practical application to be of value. Franklin later signed the Treaty of Paris, officially ending the conflict with the British Empire. Birch and Son engraving “Library and Surgeons Hall in Fifth Street Philadelphia”, 1799 His fellow trustees were unwilling to implement most of his then-radical ideas though, and Penn’s first provost, William Smith, turned the curriculum back to traditional channels soon after taking the helm from Franklin. In the 1750s, the other Colonial American colleges educated young men for the Christian ministry, but Franklin’s proposed program of study was much more like the modern liberal arts curriculum. A quick trip to Hancock Shaker Village and an examination of that location provided further information on the history of the piece. Ironing Room, Laundry and Machine Shop, Church Family, Hancock, MA, 1931, Historic American Buildings Survey, HABS MASS,2-HANC,14-12, William F. This piece had last been used by Sister Emma J. The case of drawers was acquired prior to 1947 by the Museum’s founder John S. Betrayed only by its pulls, every other element in the design and construction of this piece speaks clearly to the most classic period of Shaker furniture-making. Apparently, in an effort to help the older case of drawers fit with the new furnishings, the same decorative pulls were installed on the cupboard doors and drawers of the 1820s piece.Ī present day consequence of this decision by the Shakers is that this particular piece has not often been selected by curators seeking classic pieces of Shaker furniture for exhibitions. Some of these tables had drawers and the pulls that were used on these drawers were more decorative than was typical of Shaker pieces. ![]() Carpenters were hired to build a number of round and oval pedestal tables for the Brethren’s rooms. In keeping with the style of the building some of the older furniture was “upgraded” to better fit with the new furniture that was used. The new dwelling house, while not built in the most elaborate style of the period, was certainly a more modern structure than the one it replaced. Pedestal Table, Church Family, Mount Lebanon, NY, 1877, Published in Shaker: The Art of Craftsmanship, The Mount Lebanon Collection, (Alexandria VA: Art Services International, 1995), p. By this date, several of the families had lost significant numbers of members and it is certain that there was surplus furniture. The case of drawers discussed here may have seen in service in a building not damaged by fire or possibly it was donated to the Church Family by one of the other families at Mount Lebanon. These essential pieces of furniture were supplemented with older Shaker pieces no longer needed in other places. As a consequence, beds, tables, and cases of drawers were commissioned from outside cabinetmakers. The resulting building, completed in 1877, was built of brick with a slate roof to make it as impervious to fire as possible.Īt this period in Shaker history it would have been difficult for the Shakers to replace with their own labor the quantity of furniture that had been lost. Nearly 100 Shakers were displaced and the Shakers rebuilt as quickly as possible. All of these were total losses but the greatest loss was the Dwelling House with its furniture and personal possessions. It started in the family’s Wood House / Sisters’ Workshop due to the careless disposal of hot ashes and soon spread to the Dwelling, the Ministry’s Workshop, the Ice House, a Barn, the Gas House, and a Storehouse. ![]() On February 6, 1875, the Church Family at Mount Lebanon experienced a devastating fire. The reason for this modification is part of a significant event in the history of the Mount Lebanon Shakers. This work was undoubtedly done by or for Shakers. In this instance, most likely common wooden drawer pulls were replaced by commercially-made decorative wooden drawer pulls. The piece being considered in this blog post, a case of drawers with cupboards above the drawers, was similarly modified. 1820, Shaker Museum | Mount Lebanon: 1950.596.1. John Mulligan, photographer. To my surprise, there were hundreds of line items. In other words, LibreOffice is close to one quarter larger, despite the fact that it has removed redundancies in the code and rewritten parts for greater efficiency, operations that OpenOffice has yet to duplicate.Ībout eight years ago, I saw a copy of a LibreOffice internal document that listed all the LibreOffice features that OpenOffice lacked. The difference can be seen in the download sizes: LibreOffice’s DEB download file is 195MB, while OpenOffice’s is 159MB. However, the differences do seem to be growing – mostly due to LibreOffice’s innovations. ![]() No doubt the mutual use of Open Document Format (ODF) for files continues to retain compatibility. Even today, enough code remains the same that extensions that run with one often run with the other releases, although less often than a decade ago. The Feature DisparityĪside from Go-oo’s contributions a decade ago, the two projects initially shared a common codebase. OpenOffice’s continued existence has been quixotic, even admirable, but the project is simply not structured to compete. Equally inevitably, LibreOffice has attracted important corporate supporters such as Red Hat and Collabora while OpenOffice has been unable to replace the void left by IBM eight years ago. And in 2019, LibreOffice had 15,000 code commits, while OpenOffice had 595. In comparison, during that time, LibreOffice has had 13 major releases and 87 minor releases. The result is predictable: OpenOffice has not had a major release since 2014 and only 11 minor ones. Since then, OpenOffice has been reluctant to publish the number of contributors, but considering that OpenOffice claimed 120 in November 2012, it is doubtful that the number today is more than a small fraction of LibreOffice’s 1,722. Just as importantly, from late March 2014 to March 2015, OpenOffice had a total of 16 contributors, 12 of whom stopped contributing when IBM stopped supporting OpenOffice. A major consequence of this difference in licenses is that LibreOffice can borrow code from OpenOffice, while OpenOffice cannot borrow code from LibreOffice. To start with, OpenOffice uses the Apache License, while LibreOffice uses a dual LGPLv3/Mozilla Public License (MPL). However, by every possible standard, LibreOffice outshines OpenOffice and shows OpenOffice to be outdated. ![]() Even more importantly, many comparisons strive for a false sense of objectivity by declaring that any differences are minor. Many offer only a superficial glimpse at either office suite from the viewpoint of an unsophisticated and undemanding user. However, what is surprising is how shallow many of those comparisons are. That number comes as no surprise, given that LibreOffice and OpenOffice are the best-known open source office suites and share a common past. A search for comparisons of LibreOffice and Apache OpenOffice returns over 8.3 million results. ![]() ![]() It layers on porous surfaces because of the staining ability of the tiny dye particles to absorb into the substrate and stain it.
